Pligg Sites: Are There Actually Any Trafficked Or Popular Ones?

Pligg are currently Seeking User Testimonials from users who run successful pligg sites for a new proposed homepage section of the official pligg site. Pligg’s owners say on their blog “We are redesigning our homepage and are in need of some great quotes from Pligg users to demonstrate how people are using Pligg and giving us some general praise. If you run a successful Pligg site, or work for a company that uses Pligg in some form, please leave a testimonial comment.”. This got us to thinking what established sites use pligg and what are their approximate traffic and user participation levels as of today.

It’s a difficult task indeed trying to judge just how popular a pligg site is, therefore we think it should be broken down into a few different categories, Traffic Flow and Member Participation.

For traffic we have used the data from Compete.com, Quantcast.com and Alexa.com, member participation was measured by looking at the sites Top User pages. Member’s with a submission number of 3 or less have been considered inactive. We know this method isn’t scientifically perfect and some users with only have a small number of submissions may vote upon articles regularly, unfortunatley we can only measure one factor. And to be honest 3 submissions isn’t a lot and we are being generous so the actual active user number for these sites may indeed be less.

With these in mind we went about building a better picture of the established pligg sites and what their approximate popularity is on the web.

Note: The listed sites are in no particular order.

We see a lot of website owners saying my site is doing really well or we have a better Alexa that this site. One of the things you will notice about some of the above Web statistics is how bad Alexa really is for judging traffic. Several sites above have a high visitor count and a low Alexa rating and others have a small visitor count and a high Alexa rating, this goes to prove one thing that is sites with a high Alexa may not necessarily be highly trafficked.

If you own a website you really should add quantcast to it and judge your unique visitor count, although it’s not perfect either it gives a far better indication than Alexa Rankings do.

From all of this sites above only really IndianPad.com, Sphinn.com, Desigfloat.com and Kirsty.com stand out as having decent visitor levels over 50’000 uniques per month. PlugIM is way too slow to visit and the others as yet don’t have enough traffic per month to really benefit your articles in the same way larger social bookmarking sites do, unless your just looking for a quick backlink that is.

All in all we were fairly disappointed to see that out of all the pligg sites that have been started no more than 4 of them are really getting any traffic, it really makes you sit back and think if starting a pligg based social news site has the potential to be a contender or worth the time and effort overall.

Many dissolussioned people have seen pligg as a fast way to launch a site filled with imported RSS feeds and adverts to make a quick buck, if valid established sites are getting so little traffic an RSS Driven pligg site must be getting a trickle if that.

Traffic levels are one thing, but what about the social aspect of these bookmarking sites? Look at IndianPad, there’s not a single comment posted on any of the front page stories. Imagine Digg without comments, it wouldn’t be nearly so successful if its users didn’t generate discussion.

    Is Sphinn actually Pligg?

It may be based upon the same code but I’m sure it must have been modified

  3. Lincoln says:

    Hi Nick

This is something i agree on is the user interaction fact with commenting, it would seem social news sites that are not digg, mixx etc have problems with commenting users. It’s also something that is hard to measure but again i suppose you could sort users by number of comments and frequency etc to build a better overall picture. The overall pattern that emerges is a percentage of users to these sites are simply looking for a quick traffic hit or backlink and not really participating or interacting at all, this happens on all social news sites the difference is that a busy site absorbs this percentage with active users. On some of these smaller sites the userbase simply isn’t large or active enough to absorb submitter only users and thus it would seem that active voting and commenting suffers as a result.

    Hi Andy,

Yes Sphinn is built on pligg but it has been modified to quite an extent it would seem, it also looks so be running an older version of the system. Unfortunately we don’t know any further details than yourself about the actual sphinn system, we would say this though for sphinn in that it seems to handle traffic better than most pligg sites so it’s definitely not default in that aspect.

  4. catchpen says:

One of Alexa’s downfalls is the browser plug in it uses to count visits and I think a website can embed it the code too. If your site curtails to webmasters or developers that know what Alexa is, your site will report a falsely high rank. Alexa even mentions that accuracy can be way off if the rank is above 100k.
What has been mentioned here before is proven in this article:
Pligg is for hobby sites and once a site grows they switch over to a more secure and stable CMS or highly customize it to where it’s you can’t even tell it’s still Pligg!
Blogging Zoom looks to be abandoned? It’s niche shouldn’t ever be short of submissions and a has unique but professional looking theme.
And it’s mentioned often in Pligg articles. The owner should relaunch it.

  5. Geoserv says:

Sphinn is definitely built on Pligg, but like Lincoln said it has been heavily modified.

Blog Engage is definitely one of the better ones traffic wise that I use.

    I have 2 of my own: http://www.newsdots.com and http://www.faqpal.com

    Good post Lincoln.

  6. Yep, happy to officially confirm that Sphinn is Pligg-based but also heavily (and I mean heavily) modified.

  7. Iahead says:

I guess Jeqq.com is in top 3 Pligg Powered sites.

  8. Latest Phone says:

I’m the owner of a pligg site http://mobibu.com. Although the unique visitors is 300-400 daily (mostly from Google), but hardly any member submit any news.

  9. DebBhai.com says:

I am the owner of http://www.devbhai.com & i have up to 2000 daily visitors on My site & some members also submit stories
